System X What's System X ? That should be who, not what. System X is a collaboration between myself and fellow keyboard player and tech-head, Willie Oliphant [Solo Venture]. Both of us are big fans of electronic music ie. Jean Michel Jarre, Jan Hammer, Tangerine Dream etc. A long held wish to try a "Jean Michel Jarre" style show led to the creation of System X........ And September 1999 saw the first (and so far last) System X show... a musical and visual tour fe force that has yet to be equalled in the Highlands.... there are rumours of a potential show next year ?!?!?! Latitude 57 Latitude 57 has several of the best musicians in the Highlands spreading their wings a bit - by playing salsa, and damned catchy it is too !!! When it comes drums/percussion, you can't get more experienced than Ian Clark. He spent many a year battering the skins as part of Uriah Heap. Guitarist Roger Niven has been a stalwart of several bands in the Highlands over the years, and passes on his knowledge as a guitar tutor. A mutual friend put me in touch with Roger, to assist him with setting up his PC and installing a recording system based around my beloved Cubase. This resulted in me getting a call from Ian several months later. Well that's how it started anyhow ?!?!?! We eventually ended up covering just about every aspect of the use of Cubase - audio editing, using pre-recorded drum loops, the use of VSTis.... all great fun.
I've been lucky enough to work with some great people over the last couple years........

Grant MacAskill Originally from Dingwall, Grant spent a couple of months at Arrakis in 1999. We demo'd twelve tracks, which Grant has subsequently re-recorded and released as his first album, Touching Rock. Towards the end of the recording sessions, he was lucky enough to be called on by Runrig, to support them on their UK tour. He has since released two further albums, This Fragile Strength and The Arc. Grant has his own website, www.grantmacaskill.com, which according to his last phone call, will be updated "soon". Ghandeye Working around a core unit of Scott and Laura, Ghandeye play a unique acoustic-based collection of songs about.... well, to be honest, I frequently have no idea what they're singing about - BUT it does sound fantastic !!!!! I only wish I had the facilities to do full band recording.... some day !!!
Colin Cambell - Fields of Highland Grain Colin Campbell has been entertaining folks in the Highlands with his hilarious Local Radio shows for many years. A comic combination of sketches and songs, the recordings of these shows has travelled far and wide. A mutual acquaintance, Bobby Nelson (Photographer), arranged for me to produce a track for Colin. The song, called "Highland Fields of Grain", was written as a salute to Glenmorangie Distillery and the local grain they use to manufacture the whiskey. The song has proved to be a popular enrty on Colin's latest CD release. |
